<image:caption>There was a sudden winter snowfall on Boxing Day 2014 but I was away in Exeter. When I arrived back in Sheffield, the snow had thawed slightly but I was keen to head out to the Derbyshire Peak District to photograph some of the wintry scene before the temperature rose.
After a slog up above Ladybower Reservoir I reached the Salt Cellar just before the sun set on the day. The rich orange glow of the sun, and for once some nice cloud cover, was a nice contrast to the white snow as the light levels fell and made for a rewarding end to my long walk to reach the spot.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is Eilean Donan castle which lies on the banks of Loch Duich in the Western Highlands of Scotland.

I used my waders to get into the rising water for a lower angle on the shot to bring out the reflection to better effect. This is my favourite time for night photography - the 'blue hour' affect about 30 minutes after sunset where the challenge is to balance the artificial illumination with the ambient natural light levels.</image:caption>

<image:caption>3 hours of walking up the Villacher Alpe led to an amazing view of the snow capped Austrian mountains, backlit by the setting sun which gave some wonderful warm tones to the snowy foreground. The distant peaks blocked the low sun from lighting the cloud in the valley, which emphasizes the brighter wind blown winter snow in front of the camera.
It was bitterly cold and a biting wind made for challenging photography. I was glad of the warm apple strudel and tot of rum afterwards.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An early start to head out to photograph Mam Tor and the Hope Valley before the summer sun had risen. Castleton and Edale are hidden beneath a blanket of mist. The Derbyshire Peak District is a great location for capturing images of mist, the English countryside and the beauty of nature at its very best. The lovely warm tones of a dawn sunrise provide some beautiful light at this time of day.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is an interesting waterfall near Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales. The fall itself lies on the Cotter Beck and has severals drops which form a lovely cascade. The surrounding trees and vegetation bracket the stream and can be very colourful in the autumn.
To photograph this, I chose a very low angle in order to enhance the impact of rocks in the foreground. My camera was about level with the flowing water. To keep water at bay I recommed a good pair of waders!</image:caption>

<image:caption>I absolutely love the combination of mist and trees.
I had a shot in mind at the Chatsworth Estate but the mist was to dense and a back up plan was needed. These random trees proved an excellent substitute and the low laying mist was wonderfully well lit by the rising sun to the rear. The mist helps by diffusing the sun and a daytime white balance introduces some richness to the morning scene.</image:caption>

I chose sunset to head out up to Derwent Edge to find a location which I hoped would quite be as busy as some of the easier to reach landscape areas of the Peak District. This was shot at the very end of the day and the light was fading very quickly. A long exposure of about 10 second was needed to let in the light and it has captured the flowing movement of the water.
As a base location for a visit to Scotland and the area of the Trossachs and Glen Coe its very good and the Moness Resort is just over the road, literally, from the Birks. </image:caption>

I headed out from Sheffield with some high hopes as the early evening showed the promise of a nice sunset. The clouds always make or break a sunset in my opinion. Usually there are to many and the sunset doesn't happen or none at all which loses the interest in the sky. On this evening there was a nice combination of the best that nature can produce.

The composition of the rear of the barn lent itself to a nice view and as the sun peaked through the tree branches the effect was to create the sunstar. The long exposure shot using a neutral density filter to restrict the light levels entering the lens has create some cloud movement which adds a hint of drama to the view.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Hope Cement Works is a prominent feature in the Hope Valley above the village of Castleton and has been established there for over 80 years. The plant sits beneath Mam Tor and dominates this lovely part of the Derbyshire Peak District. Here industry really is at odds with the natural beauty of the rolling, wooded countryside.
Having said that, as a photographer I think the factory provides a great focal point and a strong feature to place in context with the surroundings. On a misty morning, especially before dawn when the lights are also on, the combination is very photogenic.</image:caption>

I arrived with plenty of time to spare before the official sunrise as I think its always best to see what different colours the dawn light gives and they can be quite interesting photographically quite some time before the sun actually rises.
Strangely on this morning the sun never made an appearance but I was treated to some fantastic pink skies which were a sight to see and made the early start well worth the effort.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is the Upper Lumsdale Falls in the Peak District and the whole set of waterfalls make a nice set of cascading falls in the woodland of the picturesque Bentley Brook in the Lumsdale valley near Matlock. The area is the site of former mills and the ruins of the buildings and watermill fittings make for an interesting visit and a reminder of our industrial heritage.
I managed to fall into the stream here and discovered the hard way that rocks and foreheads don't mix. One trip to A&E later and all was well. I returned a week later to photograph the falls properly.</image:caption>

This photograph was the first scene that greeted me as I crested the rise to see the sunset. By changing the perspective and using by wide angle lens, the foreground is full of the wonderfully back lit vegetation and the sunset is framed between the valley of the distant Peaks.</image:caption>

I headed up to Scotland for a break in October and made three visits to 'The Buckle' on one day as the light changes and the low cloud moved to and fro. Finally at sunset I was again standing at edge of the River Etive for a wide angle shot of this iconic location as the sunlight finally gave me the photo I was after. The Scottish weather adds to the atmosphere and a longer exposure helps record the force of nature in this wild Highland area.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A brief flurry of snow in mid January 2016 and for some reason Sheffield roads didn't grind to a halt. I think that was because the snow only last 37 minutes. Its been so mild for ages.

So taking advantage of the cold snap I headed out before dawn for the walk up to Bamford Edge in the Peak District just above Ladybower Reservoir to snap a few winter photographs of the popular Peak District location. The gritstone rocks of the Dark Peaks stood out nicely against the snowy landscape and the grey tones of the water made for a very atmospheric wintry photograph. <image:caption>The like to visit the Birks of Aberfeldy when I can as the location is a lovely setting for the best that Scotland has to offer for the autumnal woodland colours. to get this shot I've used my waders to set up in the middle of the stream and placed the camera quite low down to the water level. A long exposure of about 0.5 second captures the movement of the water.
As a base location for a visit to Scotland and the area of the Trossachs and Glen Coe its very good and the Moness Resort is just over the road, literally, from the Birks. </image:caption>

<image:caption>Winter 2018/2019 wasn't much to write home about from a photographers point of the view - the days of frosty mornings and crisp cold winter sunrises or sunsets seem to be a thing of the past.
So during the extended Xmas break from work, I had the time but alas not the opportunites for photos. Then on New Years Day the weather finally broke and the sun appeared so I made a very worthwhile trip down to The Roaches in Staffordshire and captured the intense first suset of 2019 at Ramshaw Rocks. </image:caption>

The area is right next to the Royal Armouries in the centre of Leeds and is a mix of retail, offices and residential apartments. These area are great because the residential and restaurant lighting really stand out when the light levels are dipping in the post dusk afterglow and the reflections in the dock, including the New House, are superb.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Abandoned millstones are a feature of the Peak District National Park and these millstones lie beneath Stanage Edge in the Dark Peak region of the Peak District.
The story I see most often is that cheaper French millstones started to be imported which produced a better quality of flour for the increasing popular white bread. So the poor old Peak District Millstones fell out of fashion and were just abandoned where they lay. Which is fortunate for me as a photographer.
This shot is taken at the start of Spring about half an hour before sunset and the light is quite strong which produces quite a nice image with lots of contrast. I like photography into the sun for maximum effect.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This shot was taken at Curbar Edge in November. The proceeding weeks has been very mediocre and I'd been hoping for some wintery frosty shots. One more trip out and I was rewarded with a fantastic sky.
In the background there was another photographer shooting away from the sunrise and I had to ponder the pantomime refrain of 'Its behind you'.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The beautiful Falls of Dochart, in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park area of Scotland, are very easier accessible from the roadside within the village of Killin.
The water cascades over weather worn rocks around islands of trees and makes for a very nice location to photograph autumnal leaves with the dynamic foreground of flowing water.
I usually try to wade out into the stream for a different angle but here the water was deep and fast flowing and the rocks were far to slippery for me to safety try this technique.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I've always wanted to photograph a great spiral staircase and I found just the right location on the Brittany coast. This is the wonderful interior of Le Phare de I'ile Vierge, the lighthouse of Ile Vierge in Plouguerneau en Bretagne, France. After a short boat trip in mid afternoon we were presented with a brief window of opportunity to photograph the beautiful paneled interior and winding staircase, with its burnished bronze banister curling its way up the 392 steps to the top. The spectacle looking up the centre of the stairs was indeed a sight to behold but getting an image free of my fellow sightseers was a challenge but worth the perseverance and really suited a black and white conversion. </image:caption>

So I was pleased with the way the elements came together for this image which is of the heather at sunset. <image:caption>I headed up to Brimham Rocks in North Yorkshire in search of a sunset to photograph as the weather forecast back home in South Yorkshire was - you guessed it - dull and overcast.
Brimham Rocks is located in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is an interesting location for photographing some superb rock formations which are weathered into some fantastic shapes. I've found it to be very busy during the day but accessible for sunrise and sunset when the visitor numbers are much less.
This formation is called The Anvil and taken with a wide angle lens to capture the foreground as well as the setting sun which gave some wonderful warm evening light.</image:caption>
