Steve Price Photographer Details

So here we are - welcome to my web site! I thought an interview with myself might help as an introduction.

How do you get into landscape photography?
I've always enjoyed taking photographs but after being in my new job for 12 months, back in in 2008, I received an unexpected bonus. Having wasted my previous reward on car repairs, I decided to put this windfall towards my first Digital SLR camera, a Nikon D80. A couple of the guys at work were into walking and photographing the Peak District and I took my lead from them. Following that, I upgraded to a Nikon D300 for two years. Currently I use a Canon 5D mark 2, a Canon 6D and L series lenses.

Do you capture everything in camera or edit photographs afterwards?
Its very rare for the conditions necessary to capture the landscape in a single shot to actually arise whilst out on a shoot. The range of light levels between the dawn sunrise, say, and the dark foregrounds is simply too great for the Canon camera sensor to record all at the same time. I don't like using filters so I always use a tripod and take a series of different exposures of the same scene. I start processing in Lightroom CC and then blend them later using masks in Photoshop. My workflow usually means I check Levels and Curves to ensure a good balance between shadows and highlights. I don't sharpen images until I know what they're going to be used for.

Where do you like to take photographs?
I didn't realise until my interest in photography took a hold, that I'm fortunate to live in Sheffield with its excellent location right next to the Peak District National Park. The Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, as well as the east Yorkshire coast, are equally accessible from Sheffield which lets me exercise lots of different photographic subjects, all of which I enjoy and seek to capture whenever time permits.

What Workshops have you been on?
Being in need of a holiday I was fortunate to book on a workshop tutored by Guy Edwardes who is an excellent landscape photographer and very generous with his time. Since then I've attend 4 more of Guy's courses and found them invaluable in my own development. I was also pleased to spend some time with Adam Burton in Slovakia which was a great experience as well.
